BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) sophomore Luke Stannard, 20, of Brook Highland, has received two national service awards, the Scholar of Promise Award and the President's Volunteer Service Award, presented by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS).
The Scholar of Promise Award is given to NSCS members who complete 50 hours of youth-oriented community service within a 12-month term. The President's Volunteer Service Award, which is sponsored by the White House, is given to NSCS members who complete at least 100 hours of service over a 12-month period.
The NSCS is the nation's only honors organization for first- and second-year college students. The society offers exclusive access to scholarships, career resources and networking. Membership is by invitation only based on grade point average and class standing.
Stannard accumulated 473 hours of volunteer work during the 2006-2007 school year. His volunteer efforts were divided between volunteer work as a kindergarten class children's leader, a varsity football coach and a work-out program designer for Evangel Christian School and a scoreboard operator for youth basketball games at the Columbiana Youth Basketball League.
Stannard is a mathematics major at UAB. He is a member of the UAB University Honors Program, the UAB Honors Program in Mathematics and the Mathematics Fast Track Program. He is the son of James and Carolyn Stannard of Brook Highland.
