The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Business recently named Robert A. Robicheaux, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Management, Marketing and Industrial Distribution (MMID) effective June 1.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Business recently named Robert A. Robicheaux, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Management, Marketing and Industrial Distribution (MMID) effective June 1. He replaces Douglas Ayers, Ph.D., who has been interim chair since August 2003.

Robicheaux is the Bruno Professor of Retail Marketing, coordinator of marketing programs and director of the Hess Institute for Retailing Development at the University of Alabama. He teaches marketing strategy, retailing, franchising and distribution systems courses.

“We are delighted to have attracted someone of the stature of Bob Robicheaux to join our faculty and leadership team in the UAB School of Business,” said Robert Holmes, Ph.D., dean of the UAB School of Business. “Dr. Robicheaux is an internationally recognized scholar in marketing and has the talent, experience, and relationships with industry to provide exceptional leadership to this department of 25 faculty and staff. In addition to his responsibilities as department chair, Dr. Robicheaux will teach advanced courses in marketing strategy and retailing, and he will work with our faculty to implement a newly designed honors program for students majoring in business. He also will work with the faculty to build even stronger relationships with business firms in our region.”

“This is an exciting time to be in the UAB School of Business,” Robicheaux said. “The department has strong national recognition for scholarly excellence, and I am very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Dean Holmes and the MMID faculty.”

“In recent years, the UAB School of Business has assembled an outstanding group of young faculty who will help to continue to elevate the school’s prominence in the national arena,” Robicheaux said. “And, there is a solid core of established scholars in MMID with whom I am looking forward to working, One of the most exciting things about the MMID faculty and students is their commitment to serving the needs of our community and region. The UAB School of Business faculty has much to offer and I hope that we will build even stronger ties to the business and professional community in the coming years.”

Robicheaux earned his bachelor’s degree, M.B.A. and Ph.D. in business administration from Louisiana State University in 1969, 1972 and 1974, respectively. His research has been published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Business Research and Journal of Managerial Issues.

In 1997, the American Marketing Association recognized Robicheaux in Marketing Educator by as one of the “Best Researchers” in marketing. He also has been designated a Fellow of the Society for Marketing Advances in recognition of a lifetime of service and achievement.

Robicheaux is past president, program chairman and currently on the board of directors of the Society of Franchising of the International Franchising Society. He is past president of the Southern Marketing Association and the Allied Southern Business Association and is on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Retail Association and the Omer DeSerres Chair of Retailing, Echol des HEC, Montreal, Canada. In addition, he has been a consultant for numerous corporations, including Mercedes-Benz U.S.I., BellSouth Advertising & Publishing Corporation, Teledyne-Brown Engineering Corporation, Volvo, General Parts Inc., Bausch & Lomb Inc., BellSouth Mobility, Con-Agra, GTE-Sylvania, Allied Signal, K-Mart, Ramada Inn International, American Suzuki Motor Corporation, B.A.S.S. and ALLTEL Wireless Communications.
