BIRMINGHAM, AL — Lowell Broom, D.B.A, CPA, chair of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Business, has been named associate dean of the school effective August 1.

Broom will be responsible for leading the academic programs in the school, both graduate and undergraduate, and will oversee the business affairs and technology offices. He also will continue his teaching responsibilities in the Department of Accounting and Information Systems, though he will step down as chair of the department.

This position represents the consolidation of three associate dean positions: the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, vacated by Lynne Richardson, Ph.D., who left in June 2001 to become dean of the school of business at Ball State University; the Associate Dean for the Graduate School of Management, vacated by the retirement of Gail McGee, Ph.D., on July 1; and the upcoming retirement of the Associate Dean for Accreditation and Administration, Robert Scott, Ph.D., on September 1.

“The associate dean positions are being consolidated into one, which I believe is consistent with the future strategic plans and priorities of the UAB School of Business, and is a less costly administrative structure,” said Robert Holmes, Ph.D., dean of the school. “Dr. Broom’s extensive experience as a distinguished faculty member, the leadership he has provided as chair of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems and his national reputation in accounting education makes him a perfect fit for associate dean of the UAB School of Business.”

“I am pleased that Dr. Holmes has the confidence in my abilities to name me to this important leadership position,” Broom said. “I will continue to work diligently for the school.”

Broom has been professor in the Department of Accounting for the past 14 years and has been chair of the department since 1996. He earned his Doctorate in Business Administration at Louisiana Tech University and is a Certified Public Accountant in Alabama and Mississippi. He is a member of numerous professional organizations including American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, American Accounting Association and Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants.
