University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) history professor John Van Sant, Ph.D., is the recipient of a 2004-2005 Fulbright/Japan-U.S. Education Commission award.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) history professor John Van Sant, Ph.D., is the recipient of a 2004-2005 Fulbright/Japan-U.S. Education Commission award.

Van Sant, who specializes in East Asian and Japanese history, will spend the 2004-2005 academic year at the Osaka University of Foreign Studies in Japan. He will teach two seminar courses and continue his research on 19th century Japan and the philosophy of combining eastern ethics and the knowledge of western science.

Van Sant is an associate professor in the Department of History. He has been a member of the UAB faculty since 2000.

The Japan-United States Educational Commission was established in 1979 to promote mutual understanding between Japan and the United States through the Fulbright Program.
