BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB Laboratory for Global Health Observation (LGHO) will host a training workshop on satellite remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology for professionals in community planning, engineering, construction, public health, emergency management, real estate and land management, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 11-13 at UAB Heritage Hall, Room 402, 1401 University Blvd.

Satellite remote sensing involves the use of satellites to monitor changes in the earth's surfaces due to natural or man-made phenomena. GIS is the collection of hardware, software and geographic details for information management, storage and data interpretation. When used in combination, satellite remote sensing and GIS offer even greater potential for planning and monitoring resource needs and usage as well as the health and safety needs in a community, said workshop organizer Sarah Parcak, Ph.D., director of the UAB LGHO.

Workshop participants will learn how to use satellite imagery and GIS technology to gather data on urban sprawl, climate changes, health related environmental factors and changes in the ecosystem. Participants also can learn to create community profiles for decision making and to analyze the socioeconomic and health characteristics of a population.

Space is limited. Early registration is $299 if postmarked before April 20. Regular registration is $349 if postmarked on or before May 8. For more details, or to register, call 205-996-7981 or e-mail lgho@uab.edu.
