UAB Summer Writing Camp Lets Kids Get Creative

In June, the UAB School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction will present the first Red Mountain Summer Writing Camp for middle school students.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In June, the UAB School of Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction will present the first Red Mountain Summer Writing Camp for middle school students. The camp is comprised of separate four-day sessions and aims to help children entering the sixth, seventh and eighth grades develop their interest in writing through fun activities that allow them to express themselves creatively and learn the fundamentals of grammar and composition.

The camp will be held 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 1-25, in the UAB School of Education, Room 128, 901 13th St. S.

Week One, June 1-4 - Writing in Media: Students will learn the art of persuasion by writing, designing and filming a commercial.

Week Two, June 8-11 - Writing in Birmingham: Students will visit, research, photograph and write about local historic locations.

Week Three, 15-18 - Writing in Culture: Students will explore the literary styles of various cultures. Guest speakers representing various cultures will share their music and literature.

Week Four, June 22-25 - Writing in Theater: Students will learn how to write for theater, including instruction in writing narration, realistic dialogue and stage direction.
