BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Two events Saturday, May 9, will honor the lives of women by helping fight ovarian cancer.

The Sixth Annual MotherWalk 5K begins at 9 a.m. in front of Crestline Village City Hall, 93 Euclid Ave. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. Cost is $25. For more information and early registration, go to www.nlovca.org.

The annual event is held every Mother's Day weekend and is hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

The Eggs 2 Ovaries benefit auction starts at 7 p.m. at the Concord Center, 2100 Third Avenue N. More than 35 dried ostrich eggs, all painted by Alabama artists, will be auctioned. Guests will enjoy live jazz and cocktail dinning. Tickets are $65. For more information call 205-401-5787.

Proceeds from both events will go to ovarian cancer research and patient care at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Ovarian cancer ranks as the fifth leading cause of female cancer death. The disease strikes primarily in women aged 55 and older, experts say.
