University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) biology and philosophy major Sukhkamal Kaur Bhullar, 22, of Huntsville, has been named to the USA Today 2009 All-USA College Academic Third Team, a prestigious ranking as one of the top 60 college students in the United States.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) biology and philosophy major Sukhkamal Kaur Bhullar, 22, of Huntsville, has been named to the USA Today 2009 All-USA College Academic Third Team, a prestigious ranking as one of the top 60 college students in the United States. USA Today will publish the winners in a special section on Wednesday, April 29, and online at allstars.usatoday.com.

Bhullar is a senior with a 3.94 G.P.A. She is conducting research in the Department of Cell Biology on a project examining the effects of hypertension on the severity of Alzheimer's disease. Her research results were published this spring in the UAB undergraduate science journal Inquiro. She will graduate in May with an honors degree in biology and will attend the university's School of Medicine in the fall.

Bhullar has been a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Society, Phi Sigma Biological Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and Golden Key International Honor Society. She received the Anne M. Cusic Scholarship in 2008, an annual award for academic excellence given to undergraduate students majoring in biology. She also has been selected for the Outstanding Biology Student Award for 2009.

She is a member of the Pre-Med American Students Association and the Asian American Organization and also is a volunteer for Project CONNECT at the 1917 Adult HIV Clinic at UAB. The program helps HIV patients initiate and maintain a consistent care plan. Bhullar assists with tracking data from clinical trials conducted at the clinic. This spring she initiated a community service project called "Fun to the Rescue" by creating a designated play area for children in the UAB Hospital Emergency waiting room. The project received the Service Initiative Award at the UAB Student Excellence Awards ceremony on April 16.

She is the daughter of Gulzar S. and Kulwant K. Bhullar of Huntsville.
