BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB junior Cheryl Dawley, 38, of Pell City, has received the Byron St. Dizier Endowed Journalism Award presented by the UAB Department of Communication Studies. The award of $1,200 was presented April 9 at an awards ceremony sponsored by the department.

The award is named in honor of former UAB Associate Professor of Communication Studies Byron St. Dizier, Ph.D., who taught journalism at UAB from 1986 until his untimely death in 1993 at age 44. The prize is awarded annually to a UAB student who demonstrates a commitment to a career in print or broadcast journalism.

"Dawley was selected from a list of applicants based on the criteria of demonstrated interest in journalism," said UAB journalism Associate Professor Minabere Ibelema, Ph.D. "She is an excellent writer and has excelled in her journalism courses."

Dawley is a double major in journalism and anthropology. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Who's Who Among College Students. She also writes for the UAB student newspaper, the Kaleidoscope.
