BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -  The UAB Department of Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) will host its Robotics Camp, the second in a series of technology camps targeting high school students this summer. The students will build simple robots using Legos NXT robotics kits, then learn to program them to perform specific tasks. This year's tasks include the Self-Parking Robot, Sumo Wrestling, Kick the Can and Balloon Buster.

The camp will run June 8-12 from 9 a.m-3 p.m. at Campbell Hall, 1300 University Blvd., Room 145.

UAB CIS technology camps are part of a universitywide commitment to community outreach. Fewer than 12 of the 460 high schools in Alabama offer computer science courses. The camps at UAB offer interested students a needed outlet for technology learning.

UAB CIS started its first weeklong computer graphics summer camps in 1999. In 2003, the weeklong robotics camp was added before a third five-day camp on computer programming was created in 2007. Now all three camps are conducted during back-to-back weeks, providing nearly a month of technology learning for interested students each June.
