BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Alabama at Birmingham Professor of political science Wendy Gunther-Canada, Ph.D., has been named new chairwoman of the UAB Department of Government effective Aug. 1.

Gunther-Canada teaches in the UAB Department of Government. She succeeds Steven Haeberle, Ph.D., who is retiring.

Gunther-Canada's research focuses on political rights, gender politics and citizenship. She is author of the book Rebel Writer: Mary Wollstonecraft and Enlightenment Politics, and is co-author of the book Women, Politics and American Society.

Her article "The Politics of Sense and Sensibility: Mary Wollstonecraft and Catharine Macaulay on Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France" received the Marian D. Irish Award and the Frederick W. Conner Prize in the History of Ideas.

She received the UAB President's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002.

Gunther-Canada is president-elect of the American Political Science Association's National Caucus for Women in Political Science. She also is co-chair of the UAB Commission on the Status of Women and a co-principal investigator of the UAB ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award funded by the National Science Foundation.

In 2004, she received the Adaljiza Sosa-Riddell Award for Exemplary Mentoring of a Graduate Student from the American Political Science Association (APSA) Committee on the Status of Latinos and Latinas in the Profession.

Gunther-Canada earned her bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Utah in 1985. She later earned her master's degree and doctorate from Rutgers University in 1991 and 1992, respectively. She has been a member of the UAB Department of Government since 1993.
