BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Gospel Choir will present a summer concert featuring traditional and contemporary American gospel music at 7 p.m. Monday, July 27, at the Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. S. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. Tickets are $6, $5 for groups of 20 or more with advance purchase, and $4 for UAB students and employees with valid ID. This 90-minute concert will be divided into two halves. The first half will feature music by beloved gospel favorites Benita Washington and The Hawkins. The second half will feature all contemporary gospel music, including selections from Tye Tribbett, Kurt Carr, Hezekiah Walker, Deitrick Haddon and Men of Standard. Music from the UAB Gospel Choir's latest recording, "Gospel 101: GO DOMINATE!" also will be performed.

About UAB

The UAB Gospel Choir is a performance class in the UAB Department of Music that is open to UAB students of all majors. One credit hour is earned for participation. The choir has grown from 38 voices in 1995 to an average of 145. It has released three CDs and a DVD, presents sold-out concerts at the Alys Stephens Center and tours annually. The choir's recordings are available on campus at Barnes & Noble @UAB, cdbaby.com, iTunes and Amazon.com. In 2008 its song "After You've Prayed About It" debuted at No. 23 on XM Radio's Spirit Channel play list; two weeks later, it climbed to the No. 2 spot for six weeks. The choir is a national and international ambassador for the university, receiving critical acclaim in newspapers, on television and online. The choir has been invited to tour London and Holland in spring 2011.
