BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Alys Stephens Center and the Birmingham Chamber Music Society present the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 in the Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South, Birmingham. Tickets are $35; $20 for students. Call 205-975-2787 or go to www.AlysStephens.org.

This renowned ensemble, featuring pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson, has set the standard for the performance of piano trio literature for more than 30 years. As one of the only chamber ensembles with all of its original members, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio (KLR) balances the individual careers of three internationally acclaimed soloists while making annual appearances together at many of the world's major concert halls, commissioning spectacular new works and actively recording.

In the past two seasons, KLR has delighted fans with their presentations of complete cycles of the Beethoven piano trios. Recently they celebrated their 30th anniversary with a performance premiering Richard Danielpour's "Book of Hours," which was commissioned for them. KLR maintains a vigorous touring schedule that takes them around the globe. Memorable concerts include the trio's performance on Carnegie Hall's Centennial Series; tours of Japan, New Zealand and Australia; a Brahms series with the Guarneri Quartet featuring his entire literature for piano and strings; the Beethoven cycle on Lincoln Center's Great Performers Series (the first time the complete Beethoven piano trios were performed at Lincoln Center), and performances across America and Europe of new concertos written exclusively for the trio by David Ott and Pulitzer Prize-winner Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.

In December 2001, Musical America named the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio the 2002 Ensemble of the Year. More recently, they were awarded the first annual Samuel Sanders Collaborative Artists Award by the Foundation for Recorded Music. The 2003-04 season marked their first as Chamber Ensemble in Residence at the Kennedy Center. Laredo and Robinson joined the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2005, while Kalichstein continues as a long-revered teacher at the Juilliard School of Music. KLR offers an international workshop for piano trios each summer at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music.

This show is part of the Birmingham Chamber Music Society Series and is sponsored by Jeanne Hutchison, Burr & Forman, Ben and Jessica Johnson, Alabama State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, The Birmingham News, WBHM and Viva Health.
