BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees has approved a new endowed scholarship that will benefit women students entering the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Honors Academy.

The endowed honors scholarship is made possible through a $100,000 gift from the Birmingham-based Woman's Club House Board of Directors of the Third District of the Alabama Federation of Women's Clubs (AFWC) Inc. The board approved the scholarship at its Sept. 18 meeting.

The Woman's Club House, located at 2908 Highland Ave., was the headquarters for the women's clubs of the Third District of the AFWC for more than 60 years. Over the years, the various federated women's clubs met there to execute the organization's mission to promote literacy and education, health and support for the arts in the Birmingham area. But in 2004, as the number of active clubs continued to decline, the Woman's Club House Board made the decision to sell the beloved club house. In 2009, they decided to dissolve the Woman's Club House Board.

To pay tribute to the Woman's Club House, board members and their tradition of volunteer service, the board voted to establish an endowed scholarship for women students in the UAB Honors Academy.

The scholarship will assist deserving female students who are enrolled in a degree-granting program through the UAB Honors Academy. First preference will be given to entering freshmen. Applicants must have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 to apply. Awards will be based on merit, and preference will be given to students who demonstrate fervor for community involvement and service-related volunteer activities. The scholarship monies will pay for tuition and fees.

The UAB Honors Academy offers top students an intense learning experience through smaller classes, individualized attention from faculty and advisers and undergraduate research opportunities. The UAB Honors Academy includes the University Honors Program, the Early Medical School Acceptance Program, the Science and Technology Honors Program, the Global and Community Leadership Honors Program and the Experiential Learning Scholars Program, as well as other programs.
