BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Professor Robert E. Stanford, Ph.D., a professor emeritus at its Sept. 18 meeting.

Stanford began his career at UAB in 1982 as an associate professor in the UAB School of Business.

A professor in the Graduate School of Management since 1989, Stanford helped establish much of the School of Business curriculum. He served as departmental representative for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) Committee, which developed the current system of MBA tracks at UAB.

Stanford also was the architect for new business courses, which employ state-of-the-art methodology for improvement of business decision processes. He also was a founding instructor in the Certificate of Advanced Business Studies Program (CABS).

Stanford's interdisciplinary approach to research and learning is exemplified by his work with the UAB Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education, which he has served as a senior scientist since 1999.

Considered an expert in the engineering and quantitative methods of business operations, Stanford is the author of numerous articles and published papers in the leading academic journals of several disciplines. He also has served the editors of many publications as a reviewer of specialized research articles in quantitative methods.

Stanford announced his retirement from UAB in 2009 but will continue to instruct students and serve the School of Business through the 2009-10 academic year.
