BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center will detail its "Progress and Promise" from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Monday, Nov. 2 in the Alys Stephens Center. The event is free and open to the public. Call 934-0034 for more information.

This event is the Cancer Center's annual celebration of progress made during the past year with an open discussion on promising cancer research projects and treatment advances at UAB. It is the one forum in which attendees can hear about the efforts of hundreds of doctors, researchers and health care personnel to protect lives, heal patients and pursue cancer cures.

UAB speakers will include Cancer Center Director Edward Partridge, M.D.; Civitan International Research Center Director Harold Sontheimer, Ph.D.; Cancer Center Associate Director for Clinical Programs Martin Heslin, M.D. UAB President Carol Garrison will welcome attendees and recognize the cancer team leadership.

"We plan on making this a tradition - of updating and providing the people of this state and the region with an eagle-eye view of the treatment advances and translational research that remain the core of our Comprehensive Cancer Center," Partridge said. "Consider this my personal invitation to everyone: Come hear about our work in battling cancer, taking research to new heights and raising the standards for team-focused cancer care."

One project that will be highlighted Nov. 2 is the renovation of the Wallace Tumor Institute on Sixth Avenue South next to UAB Hospital. The building's planned architectural details will reshape the interior and give the Cancer Center its first street-level façade.
