BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Registration is open to clarinetists of all ages for the ninth annual University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Clarinet Retreat, Feb. 6-7, 2010, in the UAB Hulsey Center for the Arts, 950 13th St. South. The retreat will be presented by the UAB Department of Music.

The retreat will feature special guest artist John Masserini, clarinet professor at Northern Arizona State University, who will join retreat coordinator and UAB Associate Professor of Clarinet Denise Gainey, D.M.A., and several area professional clarinetists to present recitals and clinics. The retreat is open to students and clarinetists of all ages and abilities for discussion of topics concerning clarinetists and performance in a large clarinet choir. Clinics will range from instrument maintenance and developing a beautiful tone to literature and contemporary techniques for today's clarinetists.

The retreat will include two recitals, the first at 7:30 p.m. Saturday Feb. 6, featuring Gainey and guest artist Masserini, and the second at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, featuring all participants in a clarinet choir. Both concerts will be held in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. Both recitals are free and open to the public.
