BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Center for Metabolic Bone Disease will host experts in biology, metastasis and osteoporosis during the Scientific Symposium on Bone Biology and Disease Wednesday, March 31 from 8 a.m. to noon at the UAB West Pavilion Conference Center, 615 18th Street South.
The symposium is designed to share advances and inspire collaboration on bone-cell science, and new diagnostic and treatment options for osteoporosis and skeletal disease. UAB is a known center of excellence in the study of bone loss, bone regeneration and the biological signals behind these changes.
UAB speakers at the symposium will be Jay McDonald, M.D., director of the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease and a lead researcher in skeletal health and disease; Gregory Clines, M.D., Ph.D., a noted endocrinologist who studies molecular signals to bone remodeling; and Majd Zayzafoon, M.D., Ph.D., a pathology and musculoskeletal expert who studies calcium signaling in bone formation and the development of bone tumors. Zayzafoon is the March 31 symposium chair.
Symposium guest speakers will be Janet Rubin, M.D., a bone-remodeling expert from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Carlos M. Isales, M.D., a noted hormone, nutrient and bone researcher from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta; Steven L. Teitelbaum, M.D., a bone-biology investigator from Washington University in St. Louis; and Laurie K. McCauley, D.D.S., Ph.D., a bone-cell and parathyroid hormone expert from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
The symposium is free and open to all health professionals and approved for continuing-education credits based on the extent of involvement. Funding support comes from the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and from an unrestricted educational grant from Lilly USA LLC.
