Timiya Nolan, MSN, CRNP, ANP-BC a rising third year student in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing PhD Program has been awarded a prestigious doctoral scholarship in cancer nursing from the American Cancer Society. The award provides Nolan with $15,000 of support as she enters the dissertation phase of her studies. The ACS award consists of training and research components, both of which will be guided by Nolan’s mentor, Professor and Associate Karen Meneses, PhD, RN, FAAN. The training plan is for a set of career development and research immersion experiences including grant writing, manuscript publication, research coordination, seminars, intensive mentoring with Dr. Meneses and an interdisciplinary team of scientists, and community outreach through the Young Breast Cancer Survivors Network directed by the UAB School of Nursing. Nolan’s research project involves addressing racial disparities in young breast cancer survivorship by adapting an already tested intervention for age and cultural relevance among African-American breast cancer survivors diagnosed before age 45.
