Heather Soistmann, left, and Jennifer BahorskiUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD) students Jessica Bahorski, MSN, RN, PPCNP-BC, WHNP-BC, and Heather Soistmann, MS, RN, CPN, CPHON, have been chosen as recipients of 2016 Ireland Research Travel Awards by the UAB Graduate School. The awards will provide each student a maximum of $1,000 and with unique and valuable travel opportunities to experience off campus elite educational experiences that enrich not only the students, but UAB as a whole.
Bahorski, a distance-learning student in Tallahassee, Florida, will use her award to participate in a research immersion experience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the summer semester. There she will work on research studies currently ongoing in the UNC School of Nursing and UNC School of Public Health which closely align with her area of study of feeding practices during infancy and an associated link with pediatric obesity.
Soistmann, a distance-learning student in Edgewater, Colorado, will use her award to travel to Children’s Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham and the University of South Alabama’s Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center in Mobile. There she will collect data from children ages 7-14 related to her area of study of addressing health issues such as fatigue and changes in blood pressure as they develop in children with sickle cell disease and how it may help decrease the impact these factors have on the development of chronic conditions in their later lives.
The Ireland Research Travel Awards are funded by an endowment established at UAB by Caroline Ireland and the late Charles W. Ireland and by new resources allocated to the Graduate School from the Provost’s office.
