Ladores chosen for NIH training course
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing Assistant Professor Sigrid L. Ladores, PhD, RN, PNP, CNE, is one of 50 scientists worldwide to participate in the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) Short Course in Genomics: Nurse, Physician Assistant and Faculty Track in Genomics: Nurse, Physician Assistant and Faculty Track, an intensive, three-day training course on genomics and genetics at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.
The course provided participants with a foundation in molecular genetics appropriate for use in research and clinical practice, with the aim of increasing the research capability among graduate students and faculty to develop and expand clinical practice in genetics among clinicians.
Ladores focuses her research on fertility and adolescents with chronic illnesses, postpartum experience of previously infertile mothers, assisted reproductive technology and cystic fibrosis care models. She is a pediatric nurse practitioner and has presented her research in local, regional, national and international conferences.
The participants who were selected to attend demonstrated an active interest in understanding genomics and genetic testing, integrating genomics into practice and educating others in genomics within either an academic or clinical setting.
“There were participants from Switzerland, South Africa, Hong Kong and Colombia in addition to those from the United States,” Ladores said. “It was great training for faculty interested in incorporating genetics/genomics into their curricula and clinical practice.”
