University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing second-year PhD student and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholar Rachel Wells, MSN, RN, CNL, won the Annual Research Award for the oral abstract competition at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses (AAHFN) held June 28-30, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois.
Wells had two presentations in the competition, with the award-winner being titled, “Describing the focus of early, outpatient palliative care consultation evaluations and treatment recommendations for individuals with advanced heart failure.” Her two abstracts were among the six selected to compete in the oral presentation competition for the Annual Research Award.
“The other presenters and I were given 15 minutes to present our research to a panel of judges and conference attendees,” Wells said. “After the presentation, the floor was opened for questions from the judges first, then the audience.”
Wells’ oral presentation objectives were focused on evaluation practices, treatment recommendations, advance care planning recommendations and regional variations of protocol-driven outpatient palliative care consultations for advanced heart failure early palliative care study participants.
Wells has also been awarded an Alabama Nurses Foundation scholarship and had a presentation accepted for the Mixed Methods International Research Association 2018 Global Conference.
Wells earned her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree from the UAB School of Nursing as part of the School’s Accelerated Master’s in Nursing Pathway (AMNP) in 2010. Through the AMNP, she completed the School’s Clinical Nurse Leader specialty track, ranked 7th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.
