Three University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing alumnae have been named Fellows of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. They are among 49 nurse leaders to be inducted into the 2024 class of AANA Fellows. Distinguished researchers, advocates, educators and practitioners are selected based on their professional contributions to nurse anesthesiology.
Terri M. Cahoon, DNP, CRNA, COI (BS, Nurse Anesthesia 1994), Lisa Allison Herbinger, DNP, CRNA, COI (DNP 2013), and Brooke Reeves Vining, MNA, CRNA, MSHA, LSSGB (MNA 2003), have been named AANA Fellows. They will be recognized in August at the AANA Annual Congress in San Diego, California.
Terri M. Cahoon, DNP, CRNA, COI (BS, Nurse Anesthesia 1994)
Cahoon is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Nurse Anesthesia at the Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing. Over the course of her career as a certified registered nurse anesthetist, she has held a clinical practice at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, Children's of Alabama and Ascension St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham. She is the Director of the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists, where she has also worked as Publication Coordinator. Cahoon’s prior involvement with the AANA includes serving as a Foundation Advocate, a member of the AANA Foundation Scholarship Committee and her role as a contributing editor of the AANA Journal.
Lisa Allison Herbinger, DNP, CRNA, COI (DNP 2013)
Herbinger is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Nurse Anesthesia at the Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing. In addition to her role as an educator, she maintains a part-time clinical practice at Children’s of Alabama, where she began her career as a CRNA in 1994. Herbinger graduated with her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the UAB School of Nursing in 2013 and was named Most Outstanding 2013 Graduate. She specializes in pediatric and neonatal care, and her work can be found in publications such as the Journal of Peri Anesthesia Nursing and Pediatric Anesthesia: A Comprehensive Approach to Safe and Effective Care.
Brooke Reeves Vining, MNA, CRNA, MSHA, LSSGB (MNA 2003)
Vining is the Associate Vice President of Perioperative Services at UAB Medicine. She graduated from UAB with her Master’s in Nurse Anesthesia in 2003, and in 2022 she received the School’s Career Achievement in Nurse Anesthesia Award. Prior to her role as Associate Vice President of Perioperative Services, Vining served as the Director for Anesthesia Services from 2020-2022 and as Senior Director for Anesthesia Services from 2022-2023.
