Your Story
What is your hometown?
My hometown is Birmingham, AL.
When did you graduate from UAB School of Optometry?
I am in the UABSO Class of 2012.
What would you say is your greatest accomplishment outside of the field of Optometry?
My greatest accomplishment are my three amazing children, Edith (11), Maddie (7) and Sam (6).
Your career in Optometry
Name of your employer(s)/Practice and title, including location.
I am the clinical field director for Schaeffer Eye Center by MyEyeDr. I see patients at the Mountain Brook location.
Why did you choose a career in Optometry?
I have always wanted to be an eye doctor (I just thought it was an ophthalmologist for a little bit. I’m so glad that wasn’t the case!). The eye is fascinating, and I saw firsthand through my parents what a meaningful profession it can be.
Where do you hope to see your optometric career in 5 years?
In 5 years, I have no idea what my career will look like but can’t wait for the ride!
Which optometric issues concern you the most?
Concerns I have are online and legislative. We have to support our PACs to keep “generic” contact lens Rx’s from becoming a reality.
Your UABSO Experience
What were your most memorable moments at UABSO?
There are so many memorable moments of my four years at UABSO, but the friendships made are what stand out in all of those memories.
Who were your mentors at the School of Optometry? Why?
Dr. Tammy Than was my mentor. She pushed us to be the best ODs we can be.
What is one piece of advice you would give current UABSO students?
The same advice I gave the 1st years during my recent lecture to them. One test does not define you but soak up all of the information you can because you will need all of it.
