The UAB School of Optometry Alumni Association has named Howard Day, OD, the 2024 Alumnus of the Year. This award recognizes his contributions to the field of optometry and his dedication to advancing the profession in Alabama.

Day was nominated for this honor due to his advocacy for the state's scope expansion bill efforts. Known for his communicative nature and work ethic, Day has shown a commitment to his colleagues and the optometry community. His efforts to further the profession in Alabama have made him a strong advocate for both the UAB School of Optometry (UABSO) and the broader optometry field.

Day's work to advance scope expansion in optometry in Alabama has been noteworthy. He has involved optometrists of all ages in this effort, encouraging them to engage in the political process and advocate for their profession. His leadership has inspired many to take an active role in shaping the future of optometry in the state.

In addition to his advocacy work, Day owns and operates Day Eye Care. His professional achievements include being named Alabama Optometrist of the Year in 2021, serving as the president of the Alabama Optometric Association (ALOA) in 2023, and holding the position of secretary/treasurer on the Alabama State Board of Optometry. He is also a board member of the Southern Council of Optometry.
