The UAB School of Optometry Alumni Association inducted new officers, and scholarships were awarded to students at the annual Continuing Education and Alumni Weekend, held Aug. 18-20 on the UAB campus.

Immediate past-president Zachary McCarty, O.D., says the board seeks new ways to serve the students and the School of Optometry.
“We have also looked for ways to help mentor students as they seek to enter our profession as colleagues,” he says. “I am excited to have Dr. Zach Steele assume the presidency, as I know he and the new officers will continue this excellent work.”
The following scholarships were awarded to optometry students:
The Dr. Jimmy Bartlett/UABSO Alumni Endowed Scholarship was awarded to Crystal Maharrey, a fourth-year student.
The Dr. Elbert A. “Bert” Coshatt/UABSO Alumni Endowed Scholarship was awarded to Ben Massey, a third-year student.
The Dr. Jess Boyd Eskridge/UABSO Alumni Endowed Optometry Scholarship was awarded to Javeya Williams, a third-year student.
The Dr. Charles A. “Scotty” McCallum/UABSO Alumni Endowed Optometry Scholarship was awarded to Will Gibson, a second-year student.
The Dr. E.C. Overton/UABSO Alumni Endowed Optometry Scholarship was awarded to Ginny Carroll, a third-year student.
The Dr. Edgar Warr/UABSO Alumni Endowed Optometry Scholarship was awarded to Brooke Conner, a first-year student.
The 2017 Alumnus of the Year is Douglas Clark, O.D., who graduated from the School of Optometry in 1982. Clark has served as part time clinical instructor for the School of Optometry and as a lecturer for business aspects of optometry. He owns three private practices in Alabama.
