Amy Henderson, OD, and Brian Roberts, OD, have joined the UAB School of Optometry as assistant professors.
Henderson will treat patients and work with students in Primary Care and serve as a Clinical Evaluation of the Visual System (CEVS) instructor.
She graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor's in biomedical science and went on to receive her doctor of optometry degree from the UAB School of Optometry in 2018. As part of her studies, she completed externships at Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center and South Glenn Eye Care. Since earning her doctorate, she has provided primary eye care to patients in a residency at Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Johnson Curran Optometry Centers.
Her experience has been in a variety of settings including primary eye care in a school-based, hospital and private-practice setting environments. Dr. Henderson also has specialized training in advanced contact lenses, injections, minor surgical procedures, ophthalmic laser and basic life support (BLS).
As a student at the UAB School of Optometry, she participated in AAO, AOA, Private Practice Club of FCO, and also served as the president of her class from 2015-2018.
Roberts will treat patients and work with students in Pediatrics, Peds-Neuro, Primary Care, and serve on the admissions committee.
Roberts is a native of Clearwater, Florida. He graduated with honors from Nova Southeastern University with a bachelor’s in Vision Science and a doctor of optometry degree. Since then, he completed a residency at Nova in Primary Eye Care with an emphasis in Pediatrics and Binocular Vision.
His past clinical experience includes rotations in neuro-ophthalmology and pediatric ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, strabismus/amblyopia clinic, sports vision clinic, and glaucoma and macular disease advanced care clinics. Dr. Roberts completed his internships at the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute working with retina, cornea, and oculoplastics specialists, and at Dr. Richard Sorkin’s private practice specializing in pediatric optometry and vision therapy.
He has volunteered with the Florida Low Vision Initiative performing eye exams on the pediatric low vision population in Jacksonville, Florida, at NSU Athletic Sports Vision Screenings performing vision screenings on NSU athletes and at the Special Olympics Opening Eyes performing “deconstructed” eye exams on athletes.
