The 2019 Helen Keller Art Show of Alabama reception will be held on Sunday, January 27th, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI). The art show will be on display at BCRI until February 28th and throughout the state at ten museums during 2019.
This is a juried show displaying art created by Alabama students throughout the state who have visual impairments, blindness and or deaf blindness. Students worked with their vision specialist and art teachers during the 2018 academic school year using various media to generate the artwork.
The arts are included in the children’s academic curriculum in areas such as the development of communication skills utilizing both visual and tactical abilities, math, science, reading and leisure time activities.
The Helen Keller Art Show has been hosted by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and UAB Vision Science Research Center and Education Outreach Module for the past 18 years. Other event sponsors are the BCRI, UAB School of Education and the Birmingham Lions Club. This partnerships that generate this event demonstrate collaboration, diversity, awareness and social equality for individuals with disabilities.
