Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program

Hosting: Information Session

UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center

Training Program Description

The purpose of this T32 training program is to train individuals who are committed to becoming independent cancer prevention and control researchers. Cancer Prevention and Control is an area of research in which scientists from a range of disciplines work to identify factors that influence both cancer risk and disease outcomes and then develop interventions that will reduce cancer prevalence and improve cancer survivors’ health and quality of life. Fellows will gain expertise in research areas such as prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and palliative care.

The CPCTP is among the nation's oldest and most consistently funded programs for cancer prevention and control education. The CPCTP follows in the footsteps of the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of the nation’s first NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers. Since receiving funding from NCI in 1988, the CPCTP has continuously received excellent ratings for over three decades. Our program's strengths are its many successful, funded research mentors who are highly skilled in a variety of cancer prevention and control topics; its excellent research infrastructure and highly collaborative environment; its consistently high trainee satisfaction rate; and its team of committed program directors and administrative experts. Our program builds upon our strong track record of successfully launching postdocs into faculty positions at leading research institutions and new doctoral graduates into top-notch fellowships. To date, of our more than 170 fellows, 75% have obtained grant funding, nearly 50% have attained faculty positions, and over 80% have launched successful cancer-related careers.
