Training Program Description
Our training program boasts one of the nation's leading research programs with groundbreaking work in arthritis, musculoskeletal diseases, and autoimmunity. Over the past five years, we’ve created a dynamic environment for both basic and clinical trainees, blending the expertise of world-class mentors and an integrated training approach. Our faculty lead prestigious university-wide interdisciplinary research centers, including the Comprehensive Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Bone and Autoimmunity Center. We also conduct cutting-edge clinical trials, testing new drugs to bring the latest therapies to our patients. Research opportunities for postdoctoral scholars are abundant, supported by dynamic core facilities such as high-resolution imaging, advanced genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics resources. These facilities, alongside a state-of-the-art flow cytometry and single-cell core, empower our researchers to push boundaries in understanding arthritis, inflammation, bone, and musculoskeletal disorders. Our collaborative approach integrates these sophisticated technologies to drive innovative research, making a significant impact on the future of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases. Applicant Information
Our program offers unparalleled opportunities for postdoctoral scholars (Ph.D., M.D./P.hD., or M.D.) committed to biomedical research, with a focus on both molecular discoveries and translational clinical research (applicants must also be either a U. S. citizen or permanent resident). Trainees will benefit from the collective resources and expertise of the Divisions of Clinical Immunology, Rheumatology, Pediatric Rheumatology, and the Comprehensive Arthritis, Musculosketal, Bone, and Autoimmunity Center, providing a collaborative, cutting-edge research setting. With a strong emphasis on career development, you’ll have access to a flexible training plan tailored to your goals, enhanced by interdisciplinary coursework and mentorship. You'll work alongside a diverse, vibrant group of researchers, including young faculty committed to developing the next generation of leaders in the field. Our program is well-supported, with established funding and guidance from an Executive Committee and regular performance evaluations to ensure continued growth and success.

Fun Facts about the Directors
Dr. Mountz is a renowned immunologist and physician-scientist, holding an endowed research chair in rheumatology. With over 220 published papers,his trainees often take the lead as first authors. Recognized for his exceptional mentorship, he’s been honored with UAB's Excellence in Mentorship award and the Southern Society's Mentor of the Year.
