In 1968, UAB hired two instructors to teach art classes part-time. In 1969, the two became full-time within what was known then as the Division of Humanities. An art major was created three years later, and in 1973, the Department of Art was formally organized within the new School of Humanities.
Now named the Department of Art and Art History within the College of Arts and Sciences, the thriving unit offers undergraduate majors in studio art and art history and graduate programs in art history and art education. Its faculty are busy this summer season pursuing their passions and honing their crafts, from installing a piece for the Evolving the Forest Conference at Dartington Hall in Devon, England, to presenting a paper on celebrity in graphic satire at the International Conference on the Enlightenment in Edinburgh, Scotland.
