In 1975, UAB erected a pedestrian bridge crossing University Boulevard at 13th Street South to accommodate a student population that had grown from 5,381 in 1969-70 — UAB’s first year as an independent university — to more than 12,100 in 1975.
University Relations recently commissioned a mural designed and created by students to brighten the popular pedestrian walkway. Student Sara Wood from the Department of Art and Art History designed the mural, titled “Flourish,” to reflect UAB ideals of prospering, growth and flowering while supporting conservation and the importance of the natural world.
