Following the recent retirement of Susan Rich as senior associate dean for Life Sciences in the UAB Graduate School, Dean Lori McMahon, Ph.D., is restructuring the position as associate dean for Graduate Biomedical Sciences and accepting applications from UAB faculty through Nov. 2.
UAB's GBS Program trains approximately 400 graduate students in eight interdisciplinary themes that integrate more than 33 departments, 20 university research centers and the affiliated drug-discovery and biotechnology institutes Southern Research and HudsonAlpha. It provides graduate students with the flexibility, guidance, resources and training to become highly competitive for outstanding postdoctoral and professional positions.
The successful candidate will need a dynamic vision that fosters excellence and innovation in the recruitment, training and education of biomedical graduate students. Faculty who have a strong record of research and scholarship and extensive experience mentoring doctoral graduate students, developing graduate education curricula or serving on graduate education committees should apply.
The new associate dean will be expected to work closely with GBS theme directors, program managers, mentors, department chairs, associate deans of the Graduate School and other schools on campus. The associate dean also will be expected to maintain an active research program and mentor doctoral students; it is expected, therefore, that this will be a 50 percent effort position.
Applicants should submit curriculum vitae, a list of at least four references — including two former trainees — and a one- or two-page vision statement that includes qualifications, relevant experience and a statement of the applicant’s vision for transforming biomedical graduate education.
