Beginning in 2018, UAB will provide medical premium assistance to covered employees whose household income, based on family size, is 1.5 times the federal poverty level or less.
Employees enrolled in UAB-provided medical coverage for 2018 will have 60 days from Jan. 1, 2018, to apply by submitting an application and required tax documents to UAB’s Benefits Office. Download an application from the UAB for Me portal.
Those who qualify are eligible for a fixed amount each payroll for the 2018 plan year — equivalent to the cost of single employee insurance through Viva Choice, said UAB Benefits Director Mike Boyd.
“The university and its benefits committee work diligently to contain health costs for our employees, and this program helps ease costs for families most in need of assistance,” Boyd said.
Once approved, premium assistance will be reflected on your paycheck and will be retroactive to the effective date of coverage. The discount will equal $76 per month (more than $900 annually), which is equal to the lowest-cost single plan offered.
