BAPS is a new Breast Cancer Recovery study opening at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. As part of our focus on healthy recovery from cancer and its treatment, we try to offer programs that will support women in their recovery. We are studying a new program that is designed to help women find ways to be active and productive in all areas of life including managing work and employment, taking care of their home and family, and doing healthy activities such as exercise, leisure, hobbies, and socializing. Women needed for a weight-loss research study

The purpose of the Feed Me Study is to examine the naturally occurring bacteria in the gut of women and the impact these bacteria may have on weight loss. We are looking for women who are non-Hispanic black or non-Hispanic white. Generally healthy ages 19-65 and currently overweight. Participation involves eating study-provided meals only for 4 weeks, completing questionnaires, basic body measurements, and providing stool and blood samples. We want to pay people who identify as African Americans to help us see if stress and other lifestyle factors can protect their mental health and their brain health. Breast cancer survivors who often feel tired, have low physical fitness and are not regular exercisers needed for research project

The ROME study is designed to discover how exercise affects the gut microbiome and fatigue in breast cancer survivors. This study includes 10 weeks of supervised, individual exercise sessions with exercise specialists. The study is funded by the National Cancer Institute. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 70 with a history of stage I, II or III breast cancer within the last five years. Participants ages 18-65 with primary FSGS needed for Phase II adaptive study

The purpose of this Phase II adaptive study is to evaluate the efficacy, safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of PF006730512 following multiple intravenous infusion in adult subjects with primary FSGS. You may qualify if you are a male or female ages 18-65, with an eGFR >45, a UPCR >1.5 g/g, also a non-responder to a single treatment regimen for FSGS, considered intolerant to an Immunosuppressant and are a non-responder to a single treatment regimen, or considered intolerant to an Immunosuppressant and are naïve to other Immunosuppressant treatment regimens for FSGS. Must discontinue steroid treatment or tapered down to a stable prednisone dose 7.5 mg per day or other steroid equivalents to achieve a stable dose before the lead-in period. Participants must be willing and able to comply with scheduled visits, must comply with birth control regimen or have proof of postmenopausal status. Have you been diagnosed with primary IgA Nephropathy?

The nefIgArd clinical research study is for patients diagnosed with primary IgA Nephropathy, IgAN, who are at risk of developing end-stage kidney disease even though they are taking medication to preserve kidney function. IgAN, also known as Berger’s disease, is a kidney disease where the antibody called immunoglobulin A, IgA, embeds itself into the kidneys. This causes inflammation, which can affect the kidney’s ability to filter the blood. Some cases of IgAN progress slowly without symptoms or go into remission, while others lead to end-stage kidney failure. Currently, there are no drugs approved specifically to treat IgAN. The purpose of the nefIgArd study is to look at the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of the study drug Nefecon compared to placebo in patients with IgAN, who are at risk of progressing to end-stage kidney disease To learn more about study participation, contact: Ciara Mitchell at 205-975-9491.

Children ages 7-13 with High-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder needed for reading comprehension study

The Cognition, Brain, & Autism Lab is recruiting participants for a research study on reading comprehension at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This study observes how children’s brains respond when they read and understand words and sentences, using a series of paper-pencil tests and a type of scan called functional magnetic resonance imaging also known as fMRI. We are recruiting children and adolescents between the ages of 7-13 diagnosed with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, children with reading comprehension difficulties, and typically developing children. Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Needed

We are seeking volunteers with Type 2 Diabetes for a weight loss research study looking at the role of dietary protein in weight loss and the remission of type 2 diabetes. The study will last approximately 12 months. Participants will participate in a 16 week State of Slim group weight loss program and a 36 week State of Slim Next Steps weight loss maintenance program, with body composition scans and lab work at no charge. Participants will receive monetary stipends of $300 to reimburse for time and travel to study classes and study visits. You may qualify for this weight loss research study if you are nonvegetarian, 18 years of age or older, has Type 2 Diabetes diagnosed within the last 6 years, are overweight or obese with a BMI greater than or equal to 27. Must be willing to participate in weekly group weight loss classes for 16 weeks, bi-weekly weight loss maintenance classes for 36 weeks, and attend four study visits over 12 months at the Lakeshore Foundation Campus. The School of Health Professions department of physical therapy is conducting a research study on muscle development in the legs of children. Strength test will be performed, such as jumping and running, and bone density will be tested through ultrasound. All testing is free. Recruiting college students age 19 and older who smoke cigarettes for study

Researchers in the School of Public Health are recruiting college students age 19 and older who smoke cigarettes (at least 5 cigarettes per day). Participants will take part in an educational counseling session. You do NOT have to want to quit smoking to participate. Participation involves coming to our center for one 30-minute orientation session, one 60-minute educational counseling session, and two 15-minute follow-up sessions. You will be asked to fill out some questionnaires, abstain from smoking overnight, and smoke a cigarette that we will provide you. You will be offered an 8-week supply of the nicotine patch that you may use if you wish. You will have the opportunity to be compensated a total of $75 cash for your participation. Seeking healthy participants with no history or diagnosis of mental illness

Seeking healthy participants with no history or diagnosis of mental illness personally or in a first-degree relative — mom, dad, sibling. You must not require medication to treat an existing physical or mental illness/disorder. Individuals abusing alcohol or recreational drugs cannot participate as there will be intensive drug screening — both urine and blood. You must be ages 18-55 and weigh less than 190 lbs. Participants are needed to evaluate the effect of a drug called LY2150023 (Pomaglumetad or "POMA" for short) on a naturally occurring chemical called glutamate in the brain. We will also ask you to receive an intravenous infusion of a drug called ketamine. Study requirements: Screening (visit 1): determine your eligibility for the study, about 2 hours and includes drug testing, a complete medical and neurological check-up; Screening Ketamine MRI (visit 2): drug testing, MRI scan and ketamine infusion to determine study eligibility; Study Day 1 (visit 3): take study medicine in clinic, clinic evaluation, blood draw about 2 hours; Study Day 5 (visit 4): Clinical evaluation, blood draw and checkup about 2 hours; Study 10 (visit 5): Clinical evaluation, blood draw, drug testing, MRI scan and ketamine infusion about 5-6 hours. Three follow up phone calls. As a participant you will receive: $50 for visits 1, 3 and 4; $100 for visit 2; $300 for completion of visit 5 for a total of $600. Simulated-altitude to optimize aerobic exercise among breast cancer survivors with limited mobility study

Are you a breast cancer survivor having difficulty walking? Do you have any lower-body pain that is restricting your mobility? If so, you may be interested in taking part in an exercise training intervention. UAB researchers are looking for overweight women - age 18-70 with a body mass index between 30-45 kg/m2 - with a history of breast cancer to participate in a novel exercise training study. Volunteers will be asked to attend two assessment sessions: an initial assessment and after 8 weeks of exercise to collect information about your health status. Further eligibility screening will be conducted by telephone. Volunteers must reside in or near Jefferson County. Men and women with stage III chronic kidney disease needed for medication study

In our study of patients with resistant hypertension, we have shown that vascular function improves with the use of spironolactone, a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist. Spironolactone has also been shown to reduce urinary protein loss in patients with chronic kidney disease. We are looking for men and women, ages 19-65, with Stage III CKD, non-diabetic or who have controlled diabetes, and who are not currently taking spironolactone or amiloride. A 24-month research study is being conducted by the UAB School of Dentistry to determine the effectiveness of a commercially available tooth colored dental filling materials bonded on the sides of teeth with three adhesives. Enrollment in the study requires that the subject be available for the 24-month study period. Do you have type 2 diabetes and kidney disease?

You may qualify to participate in an international research study to evaluate the safety and tolerability of an investigational drug for patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease. Are you at least 18 years old? Do you have type 2 diabetes mellitus and a clinical diagnosis of kidney disease? Eligible study participants will receive study medications, blood pressure checks, physical exams, laboratory tests and ECG at no cost. Participants will be reimbursed for time and travel.
