Oct. 19 Prepare to shift lanes
Starting today, the outside lanes on University Boulevard between 14th and 16th streets will be closed for construction associated with the Hill Student Center. When that is completed, the inside lanes will be closed with traffic diverted to the outside lanes. Things should return to normal in January.
Oct. 20 Serve and be served
UAB will host a picnic 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the Campus Green to launch a new initiative for non-faculty employees — a staff council. Come, hear, talk, eat and plan to be a part of the work to make this happen.
Oct. 21 Embrace a tradition that never dies
Learn about the rich traditions and culture of Día de los Muertos — Mexico’s Day of the Dead — in this free lunchtime event at ASC, featuring Wendy Jarvis of Birmingham’s Día de los Muertos Festival. It’s one of several free midday lectures open to all during UAB’s GlobalFest,a celebration of the beauty of arts from three countries, which begins Oct. 19.
Oct. 22 Sneak a peek
The dance troupe MoveSpeakSpin will be in residence at UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center for an Oct. 24 performance of “Daughters of Hypatia: Circles of Mathematical Women.” But you can catch a free show at noon during the Thursday Arts Experiences in UAB Hospital North Pavilion.

The fading advertisements are ghosts on the walls of Birmingham and paint an illuminating picture of the men and women who built an industrial boomtown. Join UAB Magazine editor Charles Buchanan, author of Fading Ads of Birmingham, to hear the colorful stories behind the signs and peer into the past on one of two walking tours through the city 10 a.m.-noon or 1-3 p.m. Details online.
