Days ahead are sew, sew

sewingWant to be a part of something big and colorful? Join volunteers 1-5 p.m. May 9 working on a giant art installation for the UAB Cultural Corridor.

Brooklyn-based Amanda Browder will use Skype to appear as a “virtual visiting artist” and sew alongside volunteers in the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts. She was here in April to begin the project and will return July 9-12.

Browder's “Magic Chromacity” comprises large-scale art pieces that will adorn the AEIVA and Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center and enable them to “speak” to each other and stand as individual works. The piece was commissioned jointly by the ASC, AEIVA and the Department of Art and Art History.

The fabric works will be installed and presented Aug. 26-28. Browder will lecture at 6 p.m. Aug. 28, and an opening reception will be held Aug. 29. Both events will be free and open to the public.

The work will be on exhibition through Sept. 5.
