Distinguished Professor Uday Vaidya, Ph.D., is the new chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. His appointment follows the departure of Professor Barry Andrews, Ph.D., who retired at the end of May after 38 years with UAB and the School of Engineering.

Vaidya, who joined the engineering faculty in 2001, has established himself as a valued teacher, mentor and researcher. He is known nationally for his work on composite materials and his leadership of UAB’s Materials Processing and Applications Development Center, which will continue.
