The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the appointment of one endowed chair and two endowed professorships during its meeting June 13.
Professor S. Louis Bridges Jr., M.D., Ph.D., was appointed to the Anna Lois Waters Endowed Chair in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology. Bridges, who earned his doctoral degree in microbiology from UAB in 1995, directs his division and the UAB Comprehensive Arthritis,
Musculoskeletal and Autoimmunity Center.
Professor Mohammad Athar, Ph.D., was named the inaugural holder of the Eric W. Baum, M.D., Endowed Professorship in Dermatology. Athar joined UAB in 2007 with appointments in the Department of Dermatology, the Skin Diseases Research Center and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. Athar’s professional honors include the UNESCO Young Scientist Award in 1989.
Professor David M. Pollock, Ph.D., was awarded the Nephrology Research and Training Center Endowed Professorship in Nephrology Research. Pollock was recruited to UAB in 2014 to lead translational work in cardio-renal research and direct the section of Cardio-Renal Physiology and Medicine in the Department of Medicine. Earlier this year, he was elected president of the American Physiological Society.
