A new program to help participants move beyond death, divorce and other losses will be intensive, interactive — and focused on healing.
The eight-week Grief Recovery Method Support Group, hosted by UAB Employee Assistance & Counseling Center counselors and certified grief recovery specialists Khoi Bishop and Dondra Goldsby, will meet weekly starting Feb. 20. Participants should be prepared to commit to the eight-week process.
According to Bishop, healing is not often associated with the process of grief.
“The reason people continue to struggle with grief is because they don’t have the skills to recover from it,” Bishop said. “People try to intellectualize grief with myths like ‘be strong’ and ‘it takes time’ but grief is about a broken heart, not a broken brain.”

The Grief Recovery Method Support Group is open to UAB employees and members of their immediate household. The group will meet 4-6 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 20-April 9, in the UAB Medicine Office of Wellness and Professional Development, 509 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. South. Participants are asked to purchase a copy of the “The Grief Recovery Handbook,” which will be available for $16, payable by cash or check, at the first meeting.
