The Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama System honored three UAB faculty with emeritus positions during the Feb. 8 meeting.
Kent G. Palcanis, D.D.S., has been named professor and associate dean emeritus in the School of Dentistry; Jerry Thompson, Ph.D., has been named professor emeritus in the departments of Biochemistry, Pediatrics, Genetics and Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, and Michael A. Thompson has been named professor emeritus in the School of Health Professions, Nuclear Medicine Technology Program.
Palcanis joined the faculty at UAB in 1987, in the Department of Periodontology. He served was associate dean for Academic Affairs from 1988 until his retirement Dec. 31, 2007. He holds membership in many professional and scholarly organizations, including the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Alabama Dental Association. He earned the UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Birmingham Dental Society Dentist of the Year and Lister Hill Lecturer in the UAB School of Dentistry.
Jerry Thompson came to UAB in Biochemistry and Pediatrics in 1972. Thompson is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics and a Founding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics, where he was also a member of the first board of directors. He is a member of the American Society of Human Genetics, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Alabama Academy of Science.
Michael Thompson joined UAB in 1977. He provided instruction in radiography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, nurse anesthesia and respiratory therapy. He was an integral part of the Nuclear Medicine Technology Program for 27 years. Thompson was editor and co-author of Principles of Imaging Science and Protection, a landmark radiography text. He also produced videos, computer-animated CDs and other materials for radiation safety courses that have been used internationally.
