A new Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Engineering will begin enrolling students in the fall to help meet a growing demand for graduates with multidisciplinary research capabilities.
The doctoral program, which will include tracks in environmental health engineering and computational engineering, will prepare engineers to solve complex problems in teams that include scientists. Students will gain the skills needed to succeed as independent and productive investigators in multidisciplinary analysis and design, with applications across a wide spectrum of science, engineering, health and medical fields.
The demand for engineering graduates with these skills has increased dramatically in the past decade, and UAB is well positioned to help meet this demand, Engineering Dean Linda Lucas, Ph.D., said. Recent investments in enabling technology and high-performance computing laboratories will provide the tools students need.
The UA System Board of Trustees approved the program Friday, April 11.
