UAB Health Informatics, MSHI
While you begin the pathway to your career in health informatics, it’s normal to have many questions about selecting the best graduate program for you. We’ve compiled some of our most frequently asked questions to help you see how UAB could be the right fit for you.
Is UAB known for its graduate and professional programs?
Yes! US News & World Reports continually ranks multiple UAB graduate programs in the Top 20 Best Graduate Programs. Moreover, the Health Services Administration department is home to the #1 Master of Science in Health Administration (MSHA) program. With the MSHI program located in the same department, many MSHA students do a dual degree (MSHA/MSHI). The UAB Health Informatics is the only accredited program of its kind in Alabama.
What are the admissions requirements?
The Master of Science in Health Informatics program begins in the fall, with an application deadline of May 31. While there are some standard admissions requirements, it’s important to note that you do not have to take the GRE or have a healthcare or IT background to apply.
Will I have to move to Birmingham, AL to attend?
No, you do not. (Although we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted an excuse to move to the Magic City!) We have intentionally designed this program with online classes and limited residential requirements so that you can keep your full-time job wherever you are, maintain any external responsibilities, and live in the city of your choice.
What tracks are available?
Our goal is to equip our students for any career path in Health Informatics. The MSHI program educational tracks include:
Data Analytics Track
The data analytics track is intended for graduate students planning to pursue the analysis and visualization of healthcare data.
User Experience (UX) Track
The UX track is perfect for students who want to focus on user requirements, user-centered design, and usability to build applications.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Track
The AI track, in collaboration with the Heersink School of Medicine, is suitable for students interested in learning AI in a clinical-focused context.
Research Track
The research track is ideal for students who desire to pursue research careers in informatics or for those who intend to continue into a Ph.D. program. This track has two electives that offer incredible diversity.
What is the program accreditation?
The Health Informatics accreditor of the University of Alabama at Birmingham is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for the Master’s degree in Health Informatics has been reaffirmed through 2027.
