UAB Care is excited to be partnering alongside OIPS to bring in silico (or in the computer) simulations to GI Surgery. We have previously used a similar simulation with the medicine teams and are excited to be expanding our cohort. We will keep the scenario confidential but our main goals are to identify specific signs and symptoms, utilize processes in place, appropriately document care, and facilitate open and effective communication. Some of our breakthroughs include how understanding PowerPlans assist in providing evidence-based care and really do make one's job easier and provide insight into patient load and processes across disciplines.
This simulation is short and happens on the unit but allows all members of the care team to sit at the table, establish rapport, and reinforce education. This also allows UAB Care to sit at the table with our bedside staff and hear what is working well and what could be changed. Our overall goal is to establish a value-driven, patient-centered culture throughout UAB Medicine through improving quality of care, reducing practice variation, and therefore controlling cost.
