freshmoveinMove-in weekend can be hectic! Stay organized and de-stressed with these tips on how to make your student's move-in the best it can be.

Basics

New Student move-in is Saturday, August 27 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The most important thing new residents can do to prepare for move-in day is CHECK THEIR UAB EMAIL for their assigned move-in time! The next most important thing is to stick to that time— there will be a lot of students moving in, so do your part to keep the flow and don’t get there early or late. At your student's assigned move-in time, you’ll pull your car/s up to the curb outside your student’s new residence hall, where volunteers will be on hand to help new residents move in. Make sure a  family member stays with the car during the move-in process so they can keep moving once everything is unloaded!

What To Bring

  • Extra-long twin-sized sheets. Many of the different big-box stores are running great deals on these.
  • A surge protector. Make best use of the outlets by adding more places to plug in electronics!
  • A handcart. Residence halls have these available for checkout, but it’s great to have an extra in case they run out.
  • Toilet paper.Seems obvious, but in all the excitement of getting your student ready for his/her first year at UAB, it’s easy to forget the little things.
  • Your student’s packed boxes (labeled with your student’s name, Residence Hall name, and room number).
  • Review the University Housing Move-in Guide. A list of what students can and should bring can be found here.

What to Expect

Once you’re settled in, new residents will get their room key, fill out an emergency contacts sheet, and receive a Room Condition Form. This is pre-filled-out with any damages that a residence hall room might already have. All new residents will receive an email copy that they must fill out and return within 48 hours with any additional damages they might find.

Tips

  • Make lists and check them twice. Making sure you know where you’re going and when will make move-in smoother for everyone.
  • Review the University Housing Move-In Guide, this will provide you with the move up to date information about move in, and living on campus.
  • Pack light. It is always better to start light, and if your student decides they have to have their turntable and sound system they can always pick them up during a weekend trip home.
  • Check the Student Housing Policies & Procedures, especially if you're still not sure what your student can and can't bring.
  • And most of all, don’t stress. You and your family have everything you need to make new student move-in successful!
