On Saturday, March 23, 2024, UAB students contributed 576 hours of community service at the 25th annual Into the Streets event. Into the Streets is a bi-annual service event hosted by the UAB Leadership & Service Council (LSC). It was designed to unite service-oriented UAB students and advance the University’s mission of serving the Birmingham community.
This year, 288 Blazers took to the Birmingham metro area and provided service to 12 community partners, like the Lovelady Thrift Store, Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank, and Barrett Elementary School. Through their united efforts, students made an economic impact of $16,439. This event also supports UAB’s initiatives as a Health Promoting University by creating a campus culture of compassion through service and strengthening the sustainability of our communities and wider society.
Various student organizations, including the Undergraduate Cancer Biology Society, Dance Marathon at UAB, and UAB Fraternity and Sorority Life were represented. “I loved every minute and enjoyed getting to meet new people and work together on making an impact in my community,” remarked a student who served at Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank.
“I really enjoyed helping make the elementary school nicer,” commented a student who volunteered to clean Barrett Elementary School. “This helps give the kids a better experience when they come to school.” These students’ remarks highlight the core values of Into the Streets: Blazer unity and positive impact.
The Leadership & Service Council will have more volunteer opportunities approaching in the future. Interested students can follow the LSC on Instagram or watch for opportunities on BlazerPulse.
