The UAB Division of Student Affairs held its annual One-Day Conference on Thursday, May 16, with more than 130 Blazers attending. The Student Affairs Professional Development Committee hosted the free event.
This year's conference theme was "Fostering a Sense of Belonging through Sustainability," focusing on building community among staff by providing professional development opportunities. Student Affairs staff and campus partners led sessions that highlighted their work and best practices in sustainability.
During the session blocks, topics like Health Promoting University Approach to Facilitating Environments for Student Engagement, Belonging, and Student Success, Boundaries and Burnout: The Importance of One to Avoid the Other, and Sustaining Free Speech Practices through Content Neutral, Risk Mitigation, and Education were discussed. UAB’s Student Counseling Services director, Angela Stowe, Ph.D., and UAB’s Sustainability Manager, Bambi Ingram, ISSP SA, were featured lunch panelists, and Mi’Kasa Mitchell, Ed.D., assistant director of Student Activities (Student Involvement and Leadership), moderated the panel.
“The 2024 One-Day Conference exceeded our expectations, providing a valuable platform for our staff to connect, learn, and collaborate. The diverse range of sessions and the focus on sustainability and belonging underscored our commitment to fostering a supportive at UAB,” said Brandon Wright, Ph.D., chair of the Professional Development Committee and director of the UAB Career Center. “We are proud of the dedication and enthusiasm shown by everyone involved and look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence in professional development.”
The next One-Day Conference is scheduled for May 2025.
