Staff Excellence

On Wednesday, Mar. 5, the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) Division of Student Affairs recognized Darien Garrison, Hill Student Center director, and Katie Horton, Hill Student Center Scheduling & Events coordinator, with its prestigious “Excellence in Action” Coin for their outstanding dedication and service.

Garrison and Horton stepped up to ensure the Hill Student Center was in pristine condition on Saturday, Feb. 22, ahead of a campus recruitment event that included prospective students and family members. The pair, who were in the Hill Student Center to check on setup for another event, assisted the facility’s morning crew in getting the building ready for the day’s event. Their efforts exemplified the Division of Student Affairs' commitment to excellence and collaboration.

“Kaitie and I are extremely honored to receive the Division of Student Affairs’ “Excellence in Action” Coin for our work to ensure the Hill Student Center was welcoming and made a positive impression for the UAB Day prospective students and family members. We appreciate the recognition of the contributions of HSC professional and student staff on UAB’s campus.”

The “Excellence in Action” Coin, commonly known as the “Thank You” Coin, is awarded to staff members who demonstrate exceptional performance beyond expectations. Recipients embody one or more of the division’s core values: student-centered service, collaboration, integrity, advocacy, and accountability. The award is presented by Student Affairs Vice President John R. Jones, III, Ph.D., and the assistant vice president in the recipient's work area.
