Campus Recreation welcomed new Associate Director Julian Springer on May 1. Springer comes to UAB having served at Northern Illinois University as the assistant director of basketball operations. He began his professional career as the director of campus recreation at Alma College and then transitioned into athletics. He also held the role of men’s basketball coach at two separate institutions before going back to recreation at Malcolm X College on the west side of Chicago.

Springer received his bachelor’s degree in recreation and a minor in coaching from Southern Illinois University in 2005. He also earned two different master’s degrees; one in 2007 from Central Michigan University in athletic administration and the other in 2011 in health, physical education and recreation from Jackson State University where he was an assistant coach for men’s basketball. Springer is continuing his education at Northern Illinois University, working towards a doctorate in adult and higher education.

The new associate director cites passion for developing students, managing the beautiful facility and taking the department of campus recreation to the next level as his reasons for returning to recreation and the south. Julian hails from Chicago, and has a love for his hometown sports teams. He is married and has a son and two daughters.
