Each semester, Disability Support Services gives students the opportunity to nominate members of the UAB faculty and staff for an array of department issued awards. These outstanding members of the UAB community excelled in providing accommodations and creating safe spaces for students with disabilities. This year the award for Outstanding Faculty member was presented to David Schwebel, associate dean of the Department of the Department of Psychology, and the Outstanding Staff Award was given to Anna Johnston, who also serves in the Psychology department as a Researcher. One DSS Graduate student stated, “Dr. Schwebel and Ms. Johnston have proactively supported me and accommodated my physical disabilities… They truly believe I can be just as active a producer of research as able-bodied students.” Both recipients lead by example to our campus by striving towards academic success for all students.

A third honor was presented to Dr. Don Lein, who received an award for Outstanding Recognition. Dr. Lein shows outstanding initiative by regularly consulting with DSS in order to support his students in a clinical setting. Dr. Lein serves as an Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education in the Department of Physical Therapy. One of his students wrote, “He really cares about everyone involved in our program and I believe he deserves recognition for going above and beyond his faculty duties.” UAB and Disability Support Services are proud to have members of our faculty and staff who are willing to go the extra mile for their students.
